Viv Brown Tribute - Chartwell Fun Walk & Run

Tribute

Viv Brown was born in Vereeniging in 1958. The youngest of three boys, he started grade 1 at the age of 5 and at the tender age of 16 (turning 17 in the September) he was head boy at CBC College in Pretoria. He loved his sport and was 8th man in the 1st Rugby team in Grade 11 and 12.

His love of running came later in life when one of his Eskom work colleagues was a runner and they used to run around Germiston Lake during their lunch breaks. In 1983 Viv ran his first Two Oceans Ultra Marathon.

Work, studies and family commitments put Viv’s running on hold for a number of years, and his next Two Oceans entry was in 2003 – but his first Comrades was run in 2002. He continued to run 14 Comrades finishing 12 and received his 10 run Green number in 2012. His number was 4377 and in true Viv style, he contacted the Two Oceans Marathon committee and asked if they had that number available, which they did, and in 2013 he received his 10 run Blue number – 4377.

After running his first Comrades with no club colours, Viv decided to open his own running club, and so Roadmasters Athletic Club was born. He ran all his marathons and ultra’s in these colours as well as the many time trials and fun runs in Chartwell.

Family holidays were always taken where a run was organised, and the Brown family quickly got to know both Cape Town and Durban well.

Viv was fortunate to run international runs – New York, Sydney, Paris and London and would have loved to run more as it gave both him and Jenni a great excuse to travel the world.

Viv was often seen running the streets of Chartwell and after his death Jenni would often get calls and messages from residents saying how they missed seeing his cheery wave.

Jenni and her family are so honoured to have this Chartwell fun run dedicated to his tribute and would like to thank everyone for this honour and all the love.
