Gardens

Growing Together, One Garden at a Time
In Chartwell, we believe that beauty grows where community takes root. Over the years, our communal gardens have been quietly nurtured by a passionate few — Karen’s dedicated landscaping team working wonders on the tightest of budgets, generous residents rolling up their sleeves, and the incredible support of our CCE levies, sponsors, and the ever-faithful Sweepstakes community. Together, we’ve kept Chartwell’s green spaces ticking over — proof that even on a shoestring, good things can bloom.

Where We Are Now
Our estate is home to five communal garden zones and one beautiful park:
Main Entrance (Third Rd & Runnymead Rd)
Second & Runnymead Rd
Blenheim Rd
Sevenoaks Ave & Third Rd
Spencer Road
Romney Park – where a bridle path, built with love by our local stable owners, loops peacefully around the perimeter
While some gardens are still finding their feet, one of the Main Entrance gardens, lovingly sponsored by Maureen Dalglish and Ian Lourens (Sweepstakes founders), continues to be a bright spot and a source of inspiration.

Where We’re Headed
Our new board has made beautifying Chartwell a top priority – not only for the joy it brings but for the lasting value it adds to our homes and estate. In a recent resident survey, the desire for more vibrant, well-kept green spaces came through loud and clear.
That’s why we’ve teamed up with the wonderful folks at Random Harvest Nursery, specialists in indigenous plants and local ecology – and joined forces with our dedicated landscaping team, Conservancy members, and passionate local residents to bring our gardens back to life. Together, this dream team is planning a full-scale rehabilitation of all communal gardens and Romney Park, starting August 2025 — just in time to welcome a vibrant, blooming spring and summer.

Our Vision
We’re creating spectacular indigenous gardens that celebrate our local biodiversity — including the rare and endangered Egoli Granite Grasslands, right here in Chartwell. These aren’t just pretty flowers — they’re a life source for our birds, insects, pollinators, and wild creatures. Restoring these areas means nurturing a healthy ecosystem from the ground up. And it’s not just about the communal spaces…

Beautify Your Sidewalk
We’re inviting every resident to take part in the movement — by replacing invasive plants with indigenous ones, sprucing up pavements, and reclaiming the joy of local gardening. Even small changes make a big impact when we all do our part.

Let’s Grow Something Great Together
With the support of CCE, Sweepstakes, and you, we’re building a legacy of natural beauty and community pride.
If you have a green thumb (or just a willing heart), we’d love to have you involved. Whether it’s volunteering time, donating plants, or simply taking care of your sidewalk — every effort counts.

Together, we can bring Chartwell’s natural beauty to life— for us, for our wildlife, and for generations to come.
