Klein Jukskei River
The Klein Jukskei River winds its way gently through Chartwell, bringing with it more than just water — it brings life.
This small river may seem modest at first glance, but it plays a vital role in supporting the natural beauty and biodiversity that make Chartwell so special. Lined with indigenous Highveld vegetation and home to a variety of birdlife, insects, and aquatic species, the Klein Jukskei is one of our community’s most precious ecological treasures.
Respect the River in All Seasons
While she may appear calm for most of the year, the Klein Jukskei transforms dramatically during the summer rains. After heavy downpours, the river can rise rapidly and become dangerously fast-moving. At peak flood levels, the bridge between Chartwell and Farmall is sometimes impassable — and tragically, lives have been lost over the years due to underestimating her force. We urge all residents and staff to exercise extreme caution near the river during the rainy season.
A Shared Responsibility
Over the years, our residents and schools have taken great pride in caring for the river through regular clean-up days, invasive plant removals, and community awareness campaigns. These initiatives not only protect local wildlife but also bring neighbours together around a common cause — keeping Chartwell clean, green, and thriving.
Whether it’s a school-led clean-up, a Saturday morning with gloves and bags in hand, or simply being mindful of what goes down our drains, every action counts. Together, we can help ensure that this ecosystem remains healthy and vibrant for generations to come.
How You Can Help
– Join a river clean-up day – Keep an eye on our WhatsApp groups or Facebook page for upcoming events.
– Plant indigenous – Native plants along riverbanks help stabilise the soil and protect water quality.
– Avoid dumping garden refuse or chemicals – What goes on the ground often finds its way into the water.
– Educate your staff and children – The more people who understand the river’s value, the better we can protect it.
The Klein Jukskei may be a quiet feature in our landscape, but it carries the heartbeat of the Chartwell Community and Conservancy. Let’s continue to nurture it — not just for today, but for the wild creatures, the adventure seekers, and the legacy we leave behind.
