HISTORY OF SWEEPSTAKES
Bringing the Chartwell community together—one R100 note at a time.
Back in 2015, during a Chartwell AGM, residents raised several ideas for community improvements. The common response? There simply weren’t enough funds. That’s when Sweepstakes was born—an initiative sparked by the creativity and determination of Maureen Dalglish and Ian Lourens.
One Saturday morning, Maureen and Ian stood at the corner of Third Road and Runnymead with a homemade banner, asking passers-by to commit just R100 per ticket to test whether the idea could take off. The response far exceeded expectations—and so the Sweepstakes tradition began.
Fast forward ten years, and the format remains as engaging as ever. Held on the last Friday of every month, gatherings take place at a local venue or a member’s home. Everyone is welcome. Just bring your own drinks, glasses, and a plate of snacks to share. Some evenings feature a theme or a guest speaker; others are more relaxed, simply offering a space to connect, unwind, and enjoy good company.
What makes Sweepstakes truly special is its impact. The R100 contribution, still unchanged after a decade goes toward local community projects, all suggested and agreed upon by Sweepstakes members. It’s a fun and meaningful way to get involved, meet neighbours, and help shape the future of Chartwell.
